If the external disk has multiple partitions, then all partitions will appear as possible volumes for back up. Automatic backups: Check Back Up Automatically > Options. Next, select Show Time Machine in menu bar > Time Machine > Back Up Now. This will open a window with a list of volumes available. Apple icon > System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Backup Disk > Use Disk. The smaller the backup drive the faster it will fill up and need to be erased or replaced. Plug in an external hard drive Start the Time Machine from System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) Click on Select Backup Disk button. Time Machine backup drives should be at least 2-3 times the total capacity of the drive(s) backed up. You can either erase the backup drive and start over or get a larger drive. Once Time Machine finds it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. Thus, from the user's viewpoint of the Time Capsule, it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparse bundle. The Time Capsule sparse bundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. There are third-party utilities that will modify the backup interval such as Time Machine Editor. By default, Time Machine backs up hourly. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. How long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before you deleted it, assuming you do at least one backup per day. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room. Time Machine makes incremental backups and for that it is good if you have more space than is on the main hard drive of data. Time Machine "thins" it's backups hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. Time Machine deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source when it needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup.
